The early twentieth century saw St Andrews Harbour in decline. An article published in the St Andrews Citizen in 1922 commented that the harbour’s ‘former trade and bustle are a thing of the past’. In the 1880s twenty-four large fishing boats were working from St Andrews, catching white fish such as haddock and plaice, as well as several smaller boats catching shellfish such as crab and lobster. However, by the 1920s overfishing by new steam trawlers had led to a collapse in the local white fish trade, and shellfish had become the focus of fishing in St Andrews.
